Understanding LCD in the Phillips 37” LCD HDTV

With modern technology advancing so rapidly, it can be hard even for a tech-savvy person to keep up with the latest terminology and products. Take something like the Phillips 37” LCD HDTV television, for example, product name 37PF7320A. You probably know HDTV means “high-definition television” -- but what is LCD? How does it relate to TV broadcasting?

LCD stands for liquid crystal display, and it is the new, improved version of the old system. Previously, TVs used cathode ray tubes (CRTs) to produce images. LCD systems weigh a lot less, are much smaller (allowing for flatscreen TVs, which would never have been possible with CRTs), and provide better picture quality. In other words, LCD displays are better than CRTs in every possible way, with the exception of price: Many CRT TVs are cheaper than LCD ones. But even that is changing as LCD becomes the standard within the TV-producing industry.

LCD is used in everything from wristwatches to computer monitors to TV sets -- pretty much anything that has to display anything. For TV sets and computer monitors, an LCD display means clearer, brighter images than the old CRTs.

Phillips has been producing LCD monitors for many years, and has added HDTV capability within the last few years, as HDTV programming has begun to be common. Phillips’ 37” LCD HDTV monitor provides lifelike pictures and great sound, and yet it weighs only 67 pounds. An old-fashioned CRT television of that size would weigh a hundred pounds or more.

So given that LCD monitors are better, which kind should you buy if you’re looking to upgrade your TV situation? To answer that question, you need to take into account several factors. You need to examine how much room you have, and thus how big a set you want to get. 32 or 37 inches is pretty common, though you can go larger if your room and budget are big enough to accommodate a larger set.

LCD is definitely the way to go in the 21st century, and the Phillips 37 LCD HDTV monitor is one good option for it.
